Let's talk about why small towns are quality over quantity.

Athletes that emerge from towns that have a population less than 50,000 have a significantly higher chance of making it to the NFL, NBA, or NHL compared to athletes who come from cities with a population over 5 million.

The realization that these communities have come to, is the fact that they do not have thousands of people in line to simply take the spot of the person in front of them. The focus is on the people that they have. They cannot afford to burn an athlete out or mistreat them, because then they field the risk of not having a team to play.

Richmond, Vermont

The Cochran Family

In 1961, Mickey and Ginny Cochran built a very small ski area on the side of a hill in Vermont. This area would produce four world-class skiers, who would then go on to have children of their own. These six children would then grow up to carry on the tradition and become members of the U.S. National Ski Team.

How did a town with a population of less than 1,500 people create Olympians that would win several medals? Well, let's see.

Cochran Ski Area

The Cochran family believes that everyone should have an opportunity to ski if they want to. Their mission revolves around the concept of every child should be able to ski or ride if they want to. If this is something you would be interested in checking out, their website is linked below!

McFarland, California

1987 State Champions - Cross Country

How did a team from the middle of nowhere cinch the first ever California high school state championship in cross country? And then how did they continue to go on and win it AGAIN in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2001?

Fact vs. Fiction

Disney did create a film that was based on this story, however, it definitely cannot be considered a documentary.

Why small towns work: 'It takes a village'

Village mentality

A kid is not just the responsibility of the parents, it is the responsibility of the community.

Proximity

In a small town, people walk or bike everywhere. This proximity also means that your number one role model can truly be your next-door neighbor.

Resources allocated to athletes

In small towns, there is probably one gym. At that gym, you can expect to see all athletes of all ages and skill levels playing together in a system that the kids themselves have designed. This develops community and culture!

Development of people and athletes is viewed as lifelong

Time, energy, and effort are poured into people in a small community because they are not being spread too thin. This leads to the genuine development of individuals in the community.

'Get out' syndrome

It is common to see athletes want to 'get out' of the environment of poverty, or lack of resources. In order to do so, they understand that they have to work hard to develop their talent.
