How do we define talent?

Who would you consider talented?

What do they do that makes them appear that way? Is it something about their personality? Work ethic? Skill? 

Why do you consider these people talented?

Did they do something special? 

What are the common attributes between them?

Create a list of attributes and characteristics for these talented people you have identified.

Elements of Talent Development Across Domains (Gilbert et al., 2001)

Common talent development elements include: 

  1. Commitment: dedication, industriousness, work ethic
  2. Confidence: attitude, belief, faith, optimism, positive images
  3. Desire: drive, enthusiasm, passion, unusual motivation
  4. Focused connection: concentration, distraction control, intentness
  5. Genetics: multiple intelligences, personality, quick learner
  6. Ongoing learning: deliberate practice, education (formal and informal)
  7. Opportunity: creativity, curiosity, environment, initiative, risk taking
  8. Support systems: coaches, cooperation, family, friendship, teachers

Talent (Howe et al.)

According to research done by Howe and colleagues, there are five properties of talent: 

  1. Partly innate (genetic)
  2. Advance indications (observable)
  3. Predictive of future performance
  4. Restricted to minority
  5. Relatively domain-specific

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
